The day will include 2 skills development training seminars. A brief outline of the training sessions is summarised below:

SESSION 1: Child protection and working with vulnerable people
At the end of this session, participants will have a broad understanding of:
-       Different forms of abuse including physical, sexual and psychological maltreatment and neglect.
-       Indicators of abuse and neglect.
-       The effects and consequences of abuse and neglect on children, families and communities.
-       Their role as volunteers and mandatory reporters.
-       Processes for making a report regarding child protection including who to contact etc..

SESSION 2:
(Sydney and Parramatta): Working with the Islamic Community
At the end of this session, participants will:

-       Be able to provide and develop culturally and religiously appropriate services that meet the diverse needs 
        of  Islamic clients.
-       Have greater awareness of Islamic beliefs and practices and their importance to the Muslim way of life.
-       Correct myths and misconceptions about Muslim women in the Islamic and greater communities.
-       Be able to identify barriers to access and equity issues for Muslim women and strategies for addressing these 
        barriers. 

(All other locations): Working with the Indigenous Community
At the end of this session, participants will have a better understanding of:
-      Issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, past and present.
-      How to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
-      The barriers to access and equity issues for indigenous clients and strategies for addressing these barriers.

Both sessions are experiential and interactive. Case studies and participants’ real life dilemmas will be utilised throughout the sessions.

COST
The forums are funded by the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA). Attendance is free for organisations funded under the Commonwealth Emergency Relief Program. Funding is not available for travel related expenses.

FACILITATORS
FaHCSIA staff will facilitate the overview of the Financial Management Program.

Forrest James
Forrest James of 4Points will facilitate the day. Forrest has 20 years experience in the human services as a volunteer, counsellor, co-ordinator, clinical supervisor and manager. He draws on this background in designing and delivering interactive and energised training for helping professionals.

Karen Milward
Karen Milward will co-facilitate the session on Indigenous Communities. Karen is a Yorta Yorta woman born and raised in Melbourne. Karen has had a long and varied professional career in the public sector and as a consultant. Karen is a strong advocate for developing culturally appropriate solutions to the issues confronting Indigenous people that empower individuals and communities to effectively move forward. 

Maha Krayem Abdo OAM
Maha Krayem Abdo will facilitate the session on the Islamic Community. Maha has worked in social welfare for nearing to two decades and currently manages the Muslim Women Association. Her vast experience includes representing the Muslim community, organising Muslim women's leadership camps and launching a magazine for young Muslim women.

ENROLEMENT
Enrolment must be received 7 WORKING DAYS prior to the event.
Please note there is a limit of 50 attendees at the Sydney and Parramatta venues.
